Rightmove Revenue Down in 2009February 28th, 2010

Rightmove plc’s revenue for the 12 months to 31 December 2009 fell by 6 percent from £74 million to £69.4 million as a result of estate agency branch closures in 2008.

While revenue was down, the number of advertisers at the portal increased by 6 percent to 17,664. The company says “stringent cost management” brought underlying operating profit up by 2 percent from £41 million to £41.9 million. 48 percent of agents chose to buy additional advertising products at rightmove.co.uk.

Managing director Ed Williams had this to say about the company’s financial results:

“We have continued to invest to give our advertisers an even better proposition, whilst everyone else has been pulling back. The success of our marketing, quality of property presentation, and effectiveness at promoting an advertsiser’s brand to a very targeted audience has been complimented by the loyalty of our customers. In this challenging property market, we have given our customers a way of spending dramatically less than they used to in traditional media.

We are reporting operating margins are up for the year, mainly a result of early action in 2008 to bring down costs in terms of headcount. We have managed to achieve this whilst improving website performance and enhancing the support options to our advertisers through our customer service teams and regional seminars.”

rightmove.co.uk had plenty to celebrate in terms of website performance. The number of email enquiries sent to agents doubled from 5.3 million to 10.6 million. The company says rightmove.co.uk’s market share amongst the four largest UK property portals reached a record high of 83 percent in the last month. The portal also achieved one million visits in a single day for the first time on 25 January 2010.

With such strong figures, it’s unsurprising that Williams is confident the addition of property listings to Google Maps in the UK won’t effect rightmove.co.uk.

“They’ve already been doing this in the US and Australia and the market leaders there have seen no negative impact,” he told dailymail.co.uk. “Their service produces chaos – it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. Plus, they don’t charge advertisers so they’re not competing for our revenues.”

  • IPGA Reports Ad Revenue GrowthFebruary 28th, 2010

    Author: Alice Allan

    ipgalogo

IPGA Ltd, the company behind the iproperty.com family of portals, has announced revenues of AUD$4.05 million and a loss of $1.32 million from continuing operations for the full year 2009.

IPGA operates portals in Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong and has investments in India and the Philippines. According to the company, underlying the decrease in revenue was 50.1 percent growth in its core online advertising revenue from $1.59 million to $2.39 million.

However, offsetting this growth was the under performance of the company’s magazine business in Malaysia and a reduction in the scale of exhibitions staged by the events business. Revenues from software, magazines and events decreased 34.6 percent from $2.54 million to $1.66 million.

On a half year basis, IPGA’s revenues in the second half of 2009 increased by 13.1 percent and net profit after tax improved from a loss of $1.08 million to a loss of $0.24 million.

IPGA explains that an additional factor in its revenue decrease was the strong appreciation of the Australian dollar. When viewed on a country by country basis in local currency, revenue from its Hong Kong and Singapore-based businesses grew by 34.4 percent and 45.5 percent respectively, while Malaysian revenue was flat.

“2009 was a good year for the IPGA business,” said Shaun Di Gregorio, IPGA’s recently appointed CEO. “We focused our operations on the three key markets of Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore, we focused on our core online advertising product, and we began improving the quality of our management team. The result was that we exited the Taiwan market, achieved a 50 percent growth in online advertising revenues and cemented ourselves as a leading player in the region. I am looking forward to 2010 as a year of continued growth in these core markets.”

IPGA says its focus for 2010 is on rapidly growing the core online advertising business in its three main countries. To do this, IPGA says it will continue to build a strong leadership team as well as significantly invest in sales and marketing at the country level.

Classified Ad Ventures is the owner of propertyportalwatch.com, and also owns a stake in IPGA.

    century21cachinese

Century 21’s Canadian website, century21.ca, is now available in Chinese as well as English and French.

The company says it decided to cover Chinese because, according to Canada’s 2006 census, Chinese dialects make up the third most common mother tongue group in Canada. Metropolitan areas including Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa have the largest Chinese-speaking populations.

“From a sales, community relations and recruitment perspective, it makes absolute sense for us to invest in a Chinese language platform,” says Century 21 Canada president Don Lawby.

Lawby also sees the move into Chinese attracting more attention from overseas buyers. “Right now, our focus is on serving Chinese clients in Canada. However, a by-product is that Canadian listings will be more visible to buyers from around the world,” Lawby says.

The Chinese version of century21.ca was built by wheretolive.com, a web technology and consulting company specialising in real estate and search engine optimisation.

“There were many challenges to overcome in the project, including switching the entire website system to Unicode, which now allows century21.ca to support all world languages,” said Alex Blyakhman, president and chief product officer of wheretolive.com.

According to wheretolive.com, Chinese visitors to century21.ca have tripled since the roll-out of the Chinese version compared to the same time a year ago.
